VW Caddy Mini Camper Teased As Pint-Sized RV Debuting In September
It offers a panoramic glass roof that measures 15.1 square-feet.

The little Volkswagen Caddy van has a miniature camper version on the way, and these sketches are our first glimpse at this tiny recreation machine. VW claims it is as comfy to sleep in this teeny-weeny RV as in the much larger California.

Based on the fifth-generation Caddy, this model is for a couple or small family who wants to go on a weekend adventure. The cabin has camping chairs and a table that stow away. For extra storage, there are bags against the walls that can double as privacy screens for the windows.

When it's time to sleep, occupants can deploy a bed that measures nearly 6.5 feet (2 meters) long. Folks can gaze at the stars through a 15.1 square-foot (1.4 square-meter) panorama glass roof. If it's allowing too much light into the cabin it's possible to darken the panel and the other windows.

VW's teaser sketches also suggest the company intends to offer a tent that attaches to the rear hatch. It would greatly expand the area for stretching out.

For a more relaxing time getting to the campsite, this camper has VW's Travel Assist adaptive cruise control. Trailer Assist makes towing easier, too.

Customers have several powertrain options. The four-cylinder diesel is available with 74 horsepower (55 kilowatts) or 121 hp (90 kW). There's also a gasoline engine with 113 hp (84 kW).

The little, Caddy-based camper will get a full debut in September. VW's commercial vehicle division doesn't have a presence in the US, so don't look for this tiny rig to come to America. The Mercedes-Benz Metris Weekender with its pop-up roof seems to fill a somewhat similar role in the country, though.
